There are buses from Stoke, and Uttoxeter train stations and also Derby - which may be the best rail connection from Doncaster.

So would it be best to get a train to stoke on trent then bus it to alton towers??0

Bus from Stoke will take about 35-45 mins. Uttoxeter is much closer. Don't know about prices but certainly easier and more pleasant! to get the train to Uttoxeter (via Stoke ) then the bus.0

But Doncaster to Derby is about half the time and half the price on the train that it would be from Doncaster to Stoke, and there are direct trains so you wouldn't have to change - you will need to change at least once to get to Stoke. Even if you decide to go to Uttoxeter, I'd suggest it'll be quicker and cheaper to go via Derby that via Stoke.
If the OP says what day of the week they were thinking of going we could look up some exact times and costs for them.....
The only thing to watch if you decide to catch a bus from Derby is that it looks like it doesn't go from immediately outside the railway station .....0 -

Actually just double checked this and the bus does stop at Derby Railway station.....

So I reckon via Derby is definitely going to be the quickest / cheapest, but there is only one bus per day so it depends on if you can fit in with the timing of that .....
So that would be.....
07:52 Cross country train from Doncaster to Derby, arrives 08:51
X53 Bus from Derby Railway station 09:40 arrives Alton Towers 10:35
X53 Bus from Alton Towers 17:30 Arrives Derby Railway Station 18:25
19:11 Cross country train from Derby to Doncaster, arrives 20:20 (20:16 on a Saturday)
Train fare from Doncaster to Derby would be £19 off peak return on a Saturday - possibly more on a weekday but I can't look at the moment as the reservations site seems to be down.0 -
Thanks for all your help. Looks like it will be derby then0

Don't know if Stafford station makes it any easier as there are also buses from there.0
