What about citing a more recent case of fare-dodging?
That of Cherie Booth QC, perhaps?

The case of Corbyn was decided by the Court of Appeal and is therefore the legal precedent or yardstick by which many similar matters may be measured
Cherie Booth QC was never prosecuted, she was only 'tried' by the 'court of public opinion' just as her husband was on the Gatwick Express when he also travelled without a ticket or means of payment.
If we always used that as the basis of determining punishment we'd probably still have public floggings!0
