A friend of mine gave me a small sunflower to plant in my garden around May time. I'm quite pleased that against the odds (ie me and slugs) it has grown very tall but hasn't actually sprouted a flower. Shouldn't it have do so by now?

I have 8 sunflowers , the tallest being 10 foot tall, the smaller ones about 6 foot. None of them have flowers on yet, but look very healthy. Maybe it's because we haven't had any sun yet!!!! lolFather Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These
(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...

Same here, we have 5 or so of the big ones but only 2 have heads on them. Can't wait to harvest the seeds so think i am bit ahead of myself!0

I presume these were all deliberately planted?
Mine have been in full flower (complete with little 'side heads' so to speak) for a good 2 weeks now. Only thing is mine are all self seeded from last years sunflowers with the ones seeded from the bird feeders only flowering this week.
Varieties are a factor too of course - the ones from last year are crosses with red sunflowers which have created a great variation in the colours this year.
I never intended to grow them this year either!0
