Dishwasher electrical problem

Hi all,

we had a problem with our old dishwasher throwing the overload switch on our house panel.
As we thought it was a problem with the dishwasher we have just brought a new one.

I have now installed it and it is working fine, BUT.... as I went to open the door I was also touching the sink (stainless) and I got an electric shock.

I was not sure what had happened so I gingerly tried it again and I was getting a shock, I switched off the dishwasher and switched of the plug and I was still getting a shock.

I then pulled out the plug, and ran an extention lead over and pluged it back in.... no shock, so I pluged it back in the original socket and I am not getting any shocks(but I have not run the machine), I dont know if it is something that had built up while it was running???

I am not sure what to do now? any advice would be appreciated.

Dave

  • This is potentially lethal. Do not use the machine until you've had the wiring checked. If you're getting a shock with the machine turned off it may be the sink is live (should be earthed)and is running through you to the machine earth.
You should not get static charge in the machine.

Use a voltmeter or a proper mains tester rather than deliberately exposing yourself to electric shock

This may not be the advice you are looking for, but if you don't take it, someone else picks up the problem and the job of calling in the coroner.

Im thinking maybe it could have been a static charge being as it was the first time it had run??

its quite possible you have a loose neautral conection somewhere, even at the diss board or a socket outlet, therefore it will be best to get a sparks to investigate.judging by the type of shock (static) you disscribe
