Wireless conection help...

Ok, where do I start? :L

I was wondering if anyone can help me. I have a PC which does not have wireless on it, so bought a wireless adapter. It was working fine, but then I snapped the USB! (Clever me!) So I have had to buy a new one. Now I have a Belkin one and I cannot for the life of me connect to the network. I have Sky wireless router and it is not finding it at all. Not even if I enter the SSID etc manually.

My OH has a laptop and can get connected with no probs wirelessly.

I am no techy whizz at all but I have tried connecting through the Belkin application that comes up and also through Windows but with no avail on either.

I hope this makes sense as as I said I am no techy whizz!

Thanks

Is the Belkin recognised by the laptop? If you go to "Network Connections" try making Windows run the Belkin adapter rather than the Belkin software...

Did you damage the USB socket when you broke the wireless adaptor?
Have you tested the socket with another device such as a memory stick?

My Belkin wireless USB adaptor never worked properly with the windows software, it only ever seemed to work reliably when running through the Belkin utility.

If you download and install Netstumbler (freeware) it will show you if the adaptor is actually working and information about any wireless networks that are in range.

  • Uninstall the previous wireless card drivers and software
  • throw the belkin product in the bin... I know this is not very helpful, but if I had a pound for every piece of belkin c**p I encountered at customers houses... They are cheap and nasty and never work properly.

    ^^Ditto the Belkin routers.
  • Thanks everyone for your help. I am going away for the weekend today - but will try the suggestions when I get back.

I have tried the Usb in different sockets but still the same.

I wondered if having the old driver still installed was a problem, and I tried to unistall it in Add/remove prgrammes but it would not let me - I will have another look on Sunday.

Right off for a 5 hour drive to Alton Towers!!!!
