broken washing machine

Options
Hi guys and girls, i need some help i bought a washing machine from Tesco aprox' 18 months ago and as we opened it the other day the handle came off so now we can't open the door. the company that made the machine has gone into administration so can't get spare parts, but as our contract was with Tesco and with the E.E.C.two year warranty we got in touch them and they sent us an 82pound card as compensation to spend in tesco, i don't think this is right, according to the E.E,C. they should honour this commitment,is there anyone who can help me with this
would really be gratefull,
L.W.

First of all ignore the so-called EEC two-year rule. It is irrelevant.

What precisely are you asking for? Do you want the washing machine repaired? If so then you need to contact Tesco again and ask for this as Tesco have a duty to offer a repair under the SOGA as the item could not be considered to have lasted a reasonable length of time. If they can offer a repair then you might be asked to pay a proportion of the repair cost. If they cannot offer a repair (which may be the case if the manufacturer has gone out of business) then they should replace the machine or refund you part of the original cost, in proportion to how much use of the machine you have enjoyed.

    Lots of info here:

  • thanks for your info Halloway, very usefull, but i managed to get the part for the handle for £12 and fitting will be £30 so thanks to Tesco's generosity i'm a bit better off,
    Thanks again,
    Lw.
