So Windows XP then. Read this here on how to search for files etc. and search for *.pst
When you find the directory containing pst files, copy the whole directory to a new folder on your hard drive e.g. Outlook Backup
Then you will at least have saved all of your Outlook files that you have. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Thank you very much. I'll try that.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

Search complete. There are no results to display.:eek:May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

I'm physically having a cold sweat here. I've clicked on the 'next' button and it's allowing me to import files from my 'old' outlook (page?) I didn't ask it to upgrade. No idea what is going on but it doesn't look so horrendous as it did a few minutes ago...May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

Okay, it's done. Thank you to closed and espresso. I have lost the mails from only 1 folder. It's a bit of a sting but not disasterous. I seem to have everything else that I can think of. And a new version of outlook that I didn't ask for but hey ho! I must have done something I shouldn't.
Lesson learned. When my husband returns I'll ask him how to back up and find a better way of using this blessed machine.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -

Hi GR
As you have XP, you may be able to go back to a previous point before the e-mails were lost. If you go to start - all programmes - accessories - system tools - system restore and follow the instructions. Hopefully you will have a system restore point from the day before etc. If not, then set up the resore function for future "challenges".
Also one easy way to "back-up" Outlook is to use the archive function in Outlook under File - archive. This quickly reduces the number of current e-mails etc in Outlook and can be accessed very easily if needed.
Good luck

Gingham,
I'm not sure if this will help or not, but have you considered hiring a professional to recover your emails? If they are really that important a qualified engineer should be able to recover the files. I know these forums are filled with people who love to help, I try my best too, but sometimes it does pay to leave the important jobs to a trained person.

Hi
This may be a bit technical for the time being, but is your outlook set up as POP3 or IMAP?
If it's POP3, all the emails should still be saved on the server and be safe.
Not too sure what will happen with IMAP when it synchronises.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

Wrong way round - it's IMAP that leaves messages on the server. In most cases, mail clients connecting via POP will download a copy of each e-mail to local storage then delete the original from the server. This behaviour can be changed, but that won't bring your messages back after they've been deleted. If it's POP3, all the emails should still be saved on the server and be safe.

Basically: POP downloads, IMAP doesn't.0 -
In which case, my apologies.
