or this one which is saying 4GB, but then in spec says its upgradeable to 4GB, am I getting confused?

It is for H's birthday, I know the first one is upgradeable to 4GB as well, so I'm not sure would be the better option. Unless anyone has any other better options for the same price?

If its internet use, email, bit of work processing etc, then the 1st laptop is more than adequate. He would barely fill 2gb, yet alone 4gb.
Note that neither would be any good for gaming, other than solitaire or poker.0 -

Sorry John, I don't know I don't come on here much. Is there a thread you can point me in the direction of?
Thanks Jaydeeuk1, it wouldn't be for gaming at all really. I think he wants to do things like putting photos on, itunes, transferring to MP3 and mainly internet use. But he likes things to be quick, gets frustrated if it takes awhile to load!0 -
No need to spend £50 on a 2GB RAM memory module.
Both models are missing a built in webcam.0 -

The second laptop has a larger hard drive and comes with more RAM. Do note that both come with 32 bit version of Windows, so neither of them is ever going to use all 4 GB.
I would just go on Dell and see what they have. I'm sure there are comparable systems for around the same price, and you'd get a 64 bit edition of Windows with it so you could actually use all the RAM.0 -

Core 2 duo is a better chip than the Sempron, so the first two are better than the latter.
