'fit for purpose' airbag sensors
Hello
We have a Kia Sportage and it is just out of warranty after 3 years.
We have a problem with the airbag sensors (for one of the airbags) and are being told that it will cost £250 to put it right.
We have never used the airbag system in our car and therefore find it difficult to understand that this would come under 'wear and tear'
I remember hearing somewhere that there is a legislation called 'fit for purpose' where it is outlined that goods should be made to last for at least 6 years.
Does anyone have any exprerience or knowledge of this.....
Thanks
Issy

The sensor would of been busy sensing away all the time as you drive, it will be reading what ever it reads to determine wheter to deploy the air bag
So the sensor has been used, but the air bag hasnt
If its just a sensor get one from the web and fit it your self, i cant see it being hard to do0 -
Sale Of Goods Act is what the OP is after.
However, as pointed out - it has been working all the time. It's just never needed to deploy t'airbag.0 -
Thanks for replies...
I understand that the sensor has been working all the time...
Reading on Kia forums it certainly seems to be a very common problem to have airbag sensor problems after 3 to 4 yrs...possibly a design fault!?
Car hasn't done a ridiculous milage or anything... surely they should be made to last the average lifetime of the car?
Will have a look at sale of goods act
Thanks Issy0 -
No safety components are not always for the life of the car, if you read your instruction manual it is likely to tell you that both seatbelts and airbags will need to be replaced at a specified interval. For my car the airbag must be replaced after 8 years and I forget the seatbelts interval.2009 wins: Cadburys Chocolate Pack x 6, Sally Hansen Hand cream, Ipod nano! mothers day meal at Toby Carvery! :j :j :j :j0

Also, due to husband being 6ft2 and wife being 5ft2 the seat moving back and forth all the time isnt very good for airbag wiring etc.
You wont get very far with the SOGA.surely they should be made to last the average lifetime of the car?
Not many cars get thru three years without warranty stuff!
Cars aint built like they used to be. But built to last just long enough...0 -
Thanks again for your thoughts
its not the airbags that need replacing, Dieselhead, just the sensor....
safety first... will of course have the sensor replaced... just feel it may be design fault as so many kia owners complain of same problem.....
will just have to cough up i suppose.... :-(0
