Help Redundancy Looming and dont know what I will be entitled to

Hi,

I am new to this site (recommended by a friend) and wondered if anyone could give me some advice.

Things have been tight finanically recently and just as we were getting back our feet I have been told that I am being made redundant.

I have a wife, who is on esa and dla and 3 young children.

I dont have any savings and am pertrified that if I cant get another job fast we will lose our house. We have a mortgage and am not sure if we would qualify for any benefits other than jobseekers.

I am going to write letters to our credit card and loan companies today to inform them but dont know what else to do.

I feel like I have let my wife down as she is ill and doesnt need this at the moment.

Any advice will be gratefully received

Thanks

How long have you worked for the company

Are you monthly paid or weekly paid.

Stop worrying for now. We will help all we can.

Also post an SOA (statement of Affairs) up so we can have a look at that for you.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

    Thanks for replying McKneff.

I have worked for my company for 20 months. Its a smallish company and I am the only one doing my job so I am the only person being made redundant which I think is making me feel worse.

I get paid monthly. I will do an SOA tonight.

    Thanks
  • Go to the CAB they will be able to help you negotitate with any creditors but if you are on benefits it is usually suggested that you offer them £1 per month for an unsecured unpriority debt.

Hello FrayKay, Unfortunately you are not entitled to any redundancy payment as you have to have worked there at leat 2 years.

However, you should be entitled to 1 months notice or one months pay in lieu of notice. (the company many enhance this of course- hopefully)

Try not to worry too much, ( I know, easier said than done) other people will be along later to give some moral support and practical help.
    see you later.

  • To the op, what rate of DLA care is your wife on?

You need to let the bank know what is happening and they may let you have an payment holiday or change to an interest only mortgage. Do you have PPI on your mortgage?

Thanks for all the advice, I cant believe how quickly people are responding.

My wife is on Middle Rate Care and Low Rate Mobility.

I have already asked for a repayment holiday on our mortgage but as we have more than 80% loan to value they said no.

hi - will Mortage company offer interest only for a while, have you informed WTC/CTC as hopefully there may be some help there? Remember if you were looking at self employed work you will still qualify for wtc - just incase you were thinking of that at all?

You could apply for Carer's allowance, but you would be best getting a benefit check from the CAB. They can do them over the phone.

At the moment your wife's ESA will be contribution based but you should ask them to change it to income based and get on to her ESA claim and claim CA. You can also claim help with the interest on your mortgage after 13 weeks.

  • You will probably be able to claim council tax benefit. May also be able to claim something on the interest part of your mortage. But don't rely on being told what you can claim, there are so many benefits out there which makes it very confusing. Try looking on the Direct.gov website, you could spend a couple of hours there but it may be worth it. Also the CAB which people have told you about. Good Luck
