Gas Meter Being Wierd??

Hi all, been reading this site for yonks but this is my first post.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas whether there could be an issue with the meter (can't think what else could cause this problem) or has other suggestions....

With British Gas for G & E (looking at switching now). Last winter (2007/8) had massive gas bills, so much so that didn't really catch up over the summer so ended up with more whopping bills last winter and DD went up to £140 a month. I queried this with BG several times during the winter but basically they didn't give a stuff and just trotted out the usual "you used it, you pay for it" line. Now we've had 2 more quarterly bills I can do a comparison between the bills for the last 12 months and the 12 months before. Basically the last years bills have been half what they were the previous year (based on usage not cost). When I looked at the bar graph comparing usage between the two years the difference is incredible. I don't understand this. We aren't doing anything differently really, same appliances/boiler etc. The last bill (July 09) was estimated (only estimated bill) and they based that on the usage for the same quarter last year and came up with a usage over 4x the actual when I submitted a meter reading.

I just think this is a bit odd. All bills have been based on meter readings which is why I think if there is a problem (no idea what though) it has to be with the meter but how could a problem have corrected itself?? I know I probably don't stand a cat in hells chance of proving it or getting any kind of acknowledgement from BG but it's annoying me that this doesn't make sense.
