A program called The GIMP is probably the nearest free :T equivalent to Photoshop available to download for various platforms here.

If you are used to Photoshop you might like to look at GIMPShop, which changes the user interface of GIMP to something more familiar. For other less experienced users: First there is Paint.net, It's not quite as powerful as The Gimp but a lot easier to use and install. It is however only for Windows 2000 and later and you'll need Microsoft's bulky .NET framework installed on your PC. There is also PhotoPlus 6.0 from a company called Serif, installs easily and it's loaded with features including layer support. In fact, it looks and feels like a "lite" version of Adobe PhotoShop except that it is relatively easy to use. I say "relatively" because graphics editing is by its nature, not simple.

    Hope it helps

Not sure if "bulky" is the right word. It's 22mb, not much more than any other framework/runtime environment.

Carli, some extra detail about the homework might help, as a secondary school ICT teacher there's very little in the sylabus I can think of that would need the full might of photoshop (or the GIMP) to get it done.

Both photoshop & the gimp are quite complex to pick up, If its something fairly simple like cropping a picture or basic editing, you might be better off with some of the easier but less powerful applications like:-

they need to design the logo that shows what they think of living in britain, basically the google logo with something on the background, don't know how to do this!

    thanx for all the suggestions

Photoshop would be a little overkill, especially for a seven year old. It's a highly professional application that can take years to master, and costs over half a grand.

The GIMP is very advanced too, but would be more suitable given that it's free.
