How to connect xbox to mobile internet?

Hi
Been trying to connect xbox to my laptop which i use a mobile dongle via a ethernet cable.
I want to see if i can run xbox live via laptop and my 3 dongle? I went to this site and followed the instructions http://www.reabo.co.uk/_tutorials/xbox-live-with-a-dongle.aspx but when i get to step 7, it will not let me change the setting to a LAN connetcion in the drop down box, it currently states a "wireless connection" the box will not drop down to change the settings?
When i do the xbox connection test it identifies the wired connection then fails to find the IP address?

Iam just experimenting with running xbox live through my dongle, i have no idea how it will respond. I read the usage will be around 50-70 mb an hr and i have 15 gigs a month and only ever use about 4 on my allowance.
Iam not even sure if my dongle will be able to provide the speed that the xbox live will need.
I do not have a landline as its cheaper for me to use my mobile phone so i cannot connect via a landline.

Any help, suggestions, thaughts would be very helpfull

Thank u
:D MOVE ALONG........ nothing to see here..!

From what you have said already, step 7 of that guide is assuming you have a fully working "local area connection" between the xbox and laptop before attempting the guide...

How are you connecting the laptop and xbox.... via a single cable between them or with a "box" in-between?

Then is that single cable a "bog standard" ethernet cable or did you specially buy a cable that was labelled "Cross-over" ethernet cable?

A cross-over cable is usually used to network two devices directly when you don’t have access to a network hub, switch or router.

Here's a slightly more comprehensive guide to connecting an Xbox360 directly to a PC to share the laptop's wireless connection (just substitute for your mobile broadband instead):
