Lightbulb exploded

Have 4 R80 spotlight bulbs in the kitchen, managed to bang one of them last week with the handle of a sweeping brush and it smashed, turned off the power yesterday and replaced it with a longlife halogen r80 - and within a couple of hours it had exploded, scared the life out of me. Are halogen bulbs susceptible to this? Might I have damaged the fitting when I removed the old lightbulb base, or is it just one of those things that sometimes happens?

They do sometimes but not that often, try again and use some tissue to handle the bulb as this will stop grease from fingers getting on the bulb and shortening its life.
  • I had a halogen bulb explode in my kitchen a couple of year ago. It went with such force it even broke the thick glass light shade. Thankfully I was stood in the dining area and my son was in the lounge as there were splinters of glass everywhere. I haven`t used the light since ( don`t think it even works after the `explosion`)

I wouldn`t buy another halogen light fitting as I wouldn`t risk this happening with anyone close to it.

If you use energy saving halogen lamps they produce less excess heat and are not as likely to explode.
