Gearbox gone wobbly?

Hi
I know it sounds daft but my gearbox is playing up a bit.
I got a focus 1.6 V reg car which has been a good car for the last 9 years I've had it.
However, and but, the gearbox is acting a bit weird.
I'm not very good with cars so I'll try and explain a bit.
When changing from 2nd to 3rd gear it's always been like a smooth flowing action. But now, when I got from 2nd, it sort of wobbles in neutral before I have to literally ram it into 3rd gear. Sometimes when going from 5th to4th, I can't 'find 4th' it wobbles too much in neutral iyswim.
I've never encountered anything like this before. So could it be my gearbox is knackered? If so, any ideas on cost wise?

Wobbles? With the car parked up and the engine switched off, does the gear lever always rest in the same place, e.g between 3rd and 4th gear, or is it 'lose' and can be moved to between 1st and 2nd and stays there when you let go of it?"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

could be a broken linkage, which is easy, could be something more painful
take it to a garage!0 -
Thing is taking it to a garage leaves me without a car for work. How do people manage then when it has to go into the sickbay for a day?Be happy, it's the greatest wealth0

take it to a garage near work, use their spare car, ask a friend to drop you at work, use the bus/taxi0

It's usually the spring on the top of the gear lever. they often brake on the Focus. Don't let no garage tell you it'll be hundreds either! Cos it's pence!0
