Eon
Options
I am pondering a switch of supplier when my current fixed deal comes to an end on 31 August.
Comparison websites suggest my best bet is NPower with Eon a close second.
However, closer inspection of the tariffs suggests NPower's annual cost includes a discount applied at the end of 12 months. Hence if I switch again before a year has passed (highly likely) I won't benefit from this.
Eon's price also includes a discount but I think this is applied each quarter - can anyone confirm? The tariff is called Save Online. If so, I think this would be a better bet as I would benefit from this discount even if I switched again (or more likely, moved house) after 6 months.
Also, better cashback is available for Eon at the moment.

The Eon discount is indeed applied every quarter but Eon also have a very sneaky T&C if you ever decide to switch away from them in the future. I've always thought this was far too hidden and hence wasn't picked up on by the vast majority of Eon customers (we had an example earlier of a Eon customer of many years standing who also dispenses advice on here on Eon's products but was blissfully unaware of it also. Have you managed to find this sneaky T&C, MrChips?Call me Carmine....

Hi MrChips,
That’s correct the discount on all E.ON tariffs is applied on each quarterly bill, but as 1carminestocky advises there is no discount applied to final bills.

Brian
Hmmm...got in there fast just in case MrChips struggled to find that T&C and doubly proved my point, Brian? Any idea why this rather important T&C isn't mentioned on the switching sites, Brian? I was under the impression they were there to give the potential punter ALL the facts in order to make up their mind. This would appear to be one important fact they miss out on even mentioning let alone explaining.
Edit: Indeed, when I was querying this by phone yesterday (as a potential customer) the first CS person I spoke to wasn't aware of it. I asked her to speak to her manager and get a definitive answer. She returned sounding rather surprised and disappointed as the manager confirmed NO EON CUSTOMER gets a discount on their final bill, no matter how long they have been with you. A T&C so secret even some of your own staff aren't aware of it? I wonder how much extra revenue it generates over the course of a financial year? Times the number of punters who leave by the amount of their final bill then times that amount by the discount not applied (this can be in excess of 17%). A tidy sum, no doubt..Call me Carmine....

Thanks for the "heads up".
I guess the best way to circumvent this "sneaky" rule is to try and arrange a switch as soon as possible after a quarterly billing date.If I had a pound for every time I didn't play the lottery...0 -

This is why it's so sneaky, MrChips. That strategy would actually be amongst the worst ones. Reason being it takes up to 8 weeks for a switch to competed. Apply to switch just after you've received your quarterly bill and chances are your final bill will be for 8 weeks of fuel - with no discount on! Like I say, it's a very very sneaky T&C. You can even fall foul of it when you've been told about its existance.Call me Carmine....

They convieniently tried to charge me an exhorbitant amount based of a completely wrong estimated reading.
So, as one does, I contacted them with a correct customer reading and expected a revised bill accordingly.
No, they said they would cancel the bill they had just sent and combine the amount owed into the final bill they would produce following the switch.
Sneaky...bill covering approximately 4.5 months and no discounts.
That (and another issue) means I would be unlikely to ever go back to E.On despite their letters often asking me to consider going back. I've a very long memory"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Crikey, what a shower. Let's hope their next initiative isn't migrating all their customers to six monthly billing.:eek:Call me Carmine....

They can do what they like now as far as I'm concerned.
I'm very pleased with my new supplier, Ebico, where they bill me every quarter for what I've used and I then pay them. No fuss, no bother, no complicated discounts or surcharges that may or may not apply depending on which way the wind is blowing...
However, I do wish Ebico would extend their interest free credit terms to 6 months rather than the usual 3, but I fear that'll remain a far fetched wish rather than a reality"Now to trolling as a concept. ....
