HSBC Gold Card 9 months or 6 months

Husband made two online applications for HSBC 9 month card. First one never arrived and second one took an eternity. Finally he went into a branch, as others had recommended. Eventually the card arrived just before Xmas break. The enclosed Ts and Cs said 6 months . The actual letter on which the Card was attached said that the details in the little box to the top right said those conditions superceded any other and those stated that the monthly rate was 1.167% etc.
He went back to the branch where the woman told him legally they were not allowed to state 0% - think she'd had too much Christmas sherry! However, not satisfied, we rang the online credit card number today to be told that it was still 0%, provided we did the balance transfer during the first 30 days. So we've done that today. Will be curious to see on any statement whether it indicates it is for 6 months or 9 months

Anyone else had a similar experience?

I believe, as long as you signed the agreement after the 1st Nov 2004 - You will have a 9 Month card.

Even my T's & Cs leaflet (Small print) said 6 months, but it was just an old leaflet enclosed.

I'm sure this will be updated in time....
  • The credit agreement I received said 6 months instead of 9. I phoned up to query this and they said there was a problem getting new paperwork printed but guaranteed it was a nine months deal.

Since getting the card I have enquired when doing a balance transfer how long the 0% period was and they said my record had 9 months on it.

Who are HSBC ? Nat West ?

Nope.  Natwest is owned by Royal Bank of Scotland (as opposed to the Bank Of Scotland which combined with Halifax and is now known as HBOS).

HSBC bought Midland Bank some 10 to 15 years ago and is based in Hong Kong, hence the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC).
    Mortgage Feb 2001 - £129,000
    Mortgage July 2007 - £0
Original Mortgage Termination Date - Nov 2018
    Mortgage Interest saved - £63790.60
    ISA Profit since Jan 1st 2015 - 98.2% (updated 1 Dec 2020)
  • This card has two different 0% periods for different categories of debts. Balance transfers are 6months 0% from date of transfer (limited window to do them in though), purchases are 0% for a bit longer, until 1st Sept 05 on my T&Cs. To avoid interest on your balance transfers after 6 months, you'd need a zero balance on the exact date that the offer expires, but could then carry on using it as a 0% purchases card for a bit longer :) If you don't have a zero balance, the BTs would be no longer 0%.

I got my card today and the t&Cs said 6 months for BTs however I expected 9 months. I called and they said it is 9 months, the t&cs are incorrect.
  • I have also being concerned about all the stuff on 6 months even although I phoned to confirm I had a 9 month deal. However, I got my statement today and it said on it "special offer 0% for 9 months" next to the balance transfer transaction so now I have it confirmed in writing.

We got a general letter today following on from the initial letter with Gold Card attached. This letter thanks us for choosing a credit card - "it comes with a 0% introductory rate on all purchases and stays that way until 1 September 2005" i.e. 9 months on purchases.

No mention of how long for balance transfers in writing. So, as I said, we will wait for the statement.
