Carpet Underlay

Options
Hi we are looking at having new carpets fitted around our house.we have gone to a local company who came out and gave us a quote and to be fair to the guy he said the underlay we have down currently would surfice in most places but having looked at internet underlay sites it seems what is already down is nearer the lower end of the (thickness and quality) scale (and has been down for at least 6 years or so)

My question is what real difference would it make for me to buy and lay treadaire or cloud 9 underlay before we get the carpets put down? - would it make a noticeable difference for the £250 or so extra it would cost to do this or am i just wasting money?

thanks

No you are not wasting money to get the best underlay you can afford. Not only does it feel so much nicer to walk on it also lengthens the life of the carpet.
    It's someone else's fault.
  • Agreed with the above. You can get a really decent underlay online much cheaper than the shops! If the underlay is 6 years old, then I would recommend it be changed, because over another 6 years it will deteriorate and flatten even more, making your carpet feel hard underfoot fairly quickly!

Go for one of the Tredaire or Cloud 9 PU Sponge underlays IMO. The 9mm will be fine and will feel nice and soft underfoot, but for something extra luxurious, give the 11mm thick products a try. They only cost a couple of quid more per roll, and I guarantee your carpet will feel mega luxurious!

thanks for the replies- i assuming the extra thickness of the underlay won't cause any problems ie with the gripper rods and doorways etc?

or am i just being thick eusa_whistle.gif

also we are looking to carpet the conservatory which currently has tongue and groove boarding down (nothing to fancy or expensive) can we just lay the underlay on top of this and staple it or will we be better taking it up and laying on the concrete base?

    Hi,

It depends on the thickness of your current carpet and underlay. If the current products down are thinner, there is a possibility you will need the bottoms of your doors shaving if you use a thicker product.....

Regarding your tongue and groove: provided the boards are completely secure, and you don't mind the possibility of them being damaged (from staples or glue from the adhesion of the underlay) there should be no problem in laying the underlay and carpet on top of it! By all means, take up the wood floor, but it may be hiding some possible repair work underneath...
