Ccleaner: Should I always back-up registry changes?

Because I'm thinking that's how I bricked my netbook - by not saving changes to registry or something else in Ccleaner. (Netbook's ok now, but I had to re-install XP.)
I am a little leery of using Ccleaner again, though.

I've never had a problem with CCleaner but, it is always recommended you backup the registry first.0 -
I'd had the netbook running for 6 weeks without problem. Last thing on Saturday night I did a cleanup and registry with CCleaner, but didn't backup the changes.
Sunday morning the netbook wouldn't boot up and I got this message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.
I did a basic trouble-shoot following advice from here but nothing worked - it was bricked, so I don't know what went wrong. I had Norton that was up-to-date.
If it makes any difference, it was a new version of CCleaner that I'd just downloaded.I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

The hal.dll issue is more likely to do with file or hard disk corruption.
It's the hardware abstraction layer and is one of the first thing windows loads, before going into the registry.0 -
Why were you playing around with the Registry anyway? If you don't know what you are doing...leave it alone.
Just use the main Cleaner and leave the Registry part alone.0 -
With Windows 98, registry cleaners (and a bit of manual hacking) were the only way I could get the OS running acceptably without needing to reinstall it every 6 months.
Windows XP (and later) don't seem to suffer the same kind of problems - I've never needed to use a registry cleaner of any kind.0 -
Always a good idea to backup the Registry. Ccleaner is an extremely useful piece of software, and also very powerful.0
