Loss of job whilst in early pregnancy

Hi-
My partner has unfortunately just lost her job, and is on the early stages of pregnancy (just before first scan). She had expected it as the business has to cut costs, and there is no feelings that it is related to pregnancy- glimmer of good work related news is that they may have some freelance work for her. We already have another boy, attending nursery three days a week (the days my partner used to work). She does have mortgage protection insurance, that we've paid for probably ten years now. My question is, can she sign on, and also hopefully to the freelance work (for which I know all about registering SE/tax returns etc). We do get a little bit of tax credit support for nursery. Our mortgage is very maneageable in size, luckily.
Can anyone advise about the signing on issue?
Thanks in advance.

I dont think you can claim the tax credits while shes unemployed that help towards the nursery costs as both of you need to be working 16 hours to get themMad Mum to 3 wonderful children, 2 foster kittens and 2 big fat cats that never made it to a new home!
