Experian report incorrect

in Credit cards
Hi
Wasn't sure where to post this.
After many many declines over the last cpl of years for loans morgatges and credit cards I finally signed up to Experian to get my credit report.
None of the things I thought it was..was the problem
There are several things which I need to fix.
Main one is the number of 'current credit accounts' (20)
A lot of these have nil balance and I've sent letters asking for them to be cancelled but the companies don't seem that keen on closing accounts.
Main problem is a DEFAULT from Orange mobile in July 2008.
To cut a long story short I had lost my pay monthly phone and sim. As I had only 2 months left I decided to just cancel the term early and pay whatever charges this came to.
Charge was about £120. this included taffif, calls cancellation charge etc. The person I spoke to at customer services said I had to make the payment then and there as he otherwise he could close the account. I made the full payment and confirmd there was no other charges.
A few months later I get a bill for £43 and a letter threatening to disconnect if not paid. Obviosly I had asked for and recieved the disconection months early and had paid in full.
Orange have made this negative on my credit account. How can I get it removed? It is causing me to me paying far more than i need to as I can't get a decent interest rate.
Thanks.

Just to add, I spoke to Experian - Freephone number, seem to get good service.
They will raise a query with Orange but the best I can hope for is a DEFAULT/SATISFIED.
This is why I always use PAYG phones now. The Telecommunications industry is run by cowboys. I'd rather peel my own skin that get under contract with any of them again!0 -
Unless you appeal & orange agree to remove default, it will stay on file until 2014.0
-
Appeal to who though?
All Orange will do is force me to pay a premuim to speak to someone in an indian call centre who just repeats themselves.
I paid what was due in full and on time. How can they get away with defaulting your account as and when they wish?!!0 -
I have a very simiar problem. look for a post called 'suttons default removal letters'. Somebody from here has kindly drafted a letter for me to send to Orange. you may be able to adapt it. Its on one of the last pages...
If you choose to appeal yourself you have to appeal to Orange.0 -
oh also, Orange customer service is UK based so they do understand what you say... They just do nothing with it!0

I don't think this will be resolved over the phone. You'll probably need to write to them. I'm not an Orange customer, so I don't know what options you get on the phone, but if you can talk to someone in billing/credit control you should be able to get an address to write.
You will need to provide as much evidence as you can in terms of calls, letters, times/dates, who you spoke to and what was said.I paid what was due in full and on time. How can they get away with defaulting your account as and when they wish?!!
What did you do after you received the letter regarding the £43?
If there's been a mistake, of course they shouldn't report a default.
It's often through incompetence and automated systems more than anything else these things happen. Unfortunately, they can be nightmare to sort out and even more so a year later. Good Luck!0 -

You can't have the credit accounts removed just because they have a nil balance. They can only show as settled and they will then show for 6 years from the settlement date.0

Cheers all,
Had a look at the default letters a cpl of times but not too good with that stuff. Don't know why I bloody should be. I might get a solicitor to look at it. Annoying as its only £43 but I they are wrong in charging it so I refuse to pay it.
Thankfully I earn enough now not to need credit but still would be nice to know it's there if I ever did.0 -
An update.
Wrote to the Darlington address 'Underground' posted above outlining my case.
Got a quick response offering REMOVAL of the default if the £43.01 was paid.
Quite happy with that as it would have cost me £20 or £30 just to get copies of the old card statements.
Thanks to all for the advice posted above.0
