Download limits

My mum is looking at a laptop so she can learn to use the internet especially the online shopping, ebay etc (I really fear for my Dad's credit card)

Anyhoo, she wants to know what is the best package to go for, but it must be the cheapest.

Most of the ones she have opted for have a download limit of 2GB, approximately how much internet time would this get her? I have no idea when it comes to this as I'm on unlimited as the PC and internet are in use almost all day by at least one of us in the house.

2GB would serve to max out any credit card.

So long as she doesn't download much or catch up on TV using iPlayer then 2GB will be enough for a daily surfing and email session plus even a little YouTube etc.

Just plain browsing uses very little download. Just a little iPlayer (or similar) usage uses a lot.

The real question is will she get hooked and use more?

If they simply surf the Internet, watch the odd video on youtube, listen to the odd podcast or radio 2 then 2GB will be fine.

It's when you start downloading BBC iPlayer programmes, streaming them live, downloading music via iTunes etc that you'd start to rack up the MB.

Have they thought about Virgin Media or O2 Broadband?

Don't touch Virgin with a bargepole complete bunch of criminals and totally incompetent although I may be a little bit biased hehe.

Highly recommend O2 broadband

We're on the premium up to 20meg (I get about 9-10meg) for £9.79 a month (£14.68 for non o2 customers). They never restrict you no matter how much you download, it is truly unlimited! 2gb wouldn't last me a day! I really can't understand how any isp gets away with 2gb limits these days (I'm looking at you BT!!!)

The standard is £7.34 for up to 8meg with (truly) unlimited download limit, can you really get a better deal than that?

Very reliable network too never slows down when in peak time either!

Couldn't disagree more. I've only ever had 1 problem with them and they resolved this on the phone promptly and successfully.

Are you thinking of their ADSL? Most people say that the cable product is OK (but unlike O2 LLU they throttle heavy downloaders).

I also have O2 LLU and it is excellent. The O2 Access product which is based on the BT Wholesale IPstream product is a steaming pile of brown stuff (like most ADSL based on IPstream).
