Practical Kitchen decor

Hi, I am just about to get a new kitchen and would like to check other's experience of some items I am choosing between. It seems loke a lot of currently fashionable kitchen trends are not all that practical to use and keep clean!
Does anyone have experience of...
White gloss kitchen units ( ikea )
Real oak worktops
Stainless steel oven/hob/extractor fan
I live on my own without kids so not too much wear and tear, not the most enthusiastic cleaner but do like to be able to give things a good scrub down and worry that gloss and steel will be prone to scratching.
Any advice welcome!

Hi
Well, to start off with, although white gloss doors will show up dirt quite easily, they are also VERY easy to clean. You wont need to scrub or anything, just a quick wipe with a cloth and some soapy water should be enough to get them clean.
Same goes for the stainless steel appliances, you shouldn't need to scrub them at all, soapy water should again be sufficient.
As for the worktops, well, they are easy enough to keep clean, however you will need to treat the timber every 6 months, which can get a bit annoying. If you don't do this, then the worktops wont keep their looks for as long and will be easy to mark...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Thanks for that. I do love the look of wood work tops but understand the down side of maintenance, my present nasty worktop is much easier to maintain.
Anyone else got experience of these items?0
