intel pentium comparison

Hi there good people of Techie Stuff,

Hoping one of you smart people can help me. I'm going to buy a laptop tomorrow and there is a £30 difference between a laptop with Intel Pentium Dual-Core T2390 1.86GHz and a laptop with Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 2.0GHz.

Is it worth spending the extra £30 for the core 2 duo?

Thanks in advance.

Looking at the first CPU benchmark site google brings up (www.cpubenchmark.net) the T2390 benchmarks at '957' and the T7250 comes in at '1,077' (the numbers just being an indication of relative processing power).

Modern high end CPUs are listed as delivering '6000' odd on the same scale so in the grand scheme of things the two you are looking at are pretty similar ->both about 1/6 as powerful as something current & expensive but you do get an extra 10% processing power for your money.

Thats assuming other factors are boradly the same, ie RAM size, graphics capability, hard disk interface (IDE / SATA / SATA 2) etc...

Thank you for taking the time to post JasX. So it''s much of a muchness? Everything else is the same. I could spend that 30 quid on a headset or some other accessory?

If you believe in future proofing then it probably is worth the extra.
After all, you can go for a bit worse graphics, a bit worse clock spped, a bit less RAM etc and each time the price should go down.

So I guess it's about deciding what you want to spend and getting the best you can for the budget?

    Good luck anyhow.

notebookcheck.net also has a pretty comprehensive list of benchmarks on the various mobile CPUs....

just had a quick check on those two particular CPUs you mentioned and it appears that the T7250 is a slightly faster CPU built on the more recent "Core2Duo" architecture whereas the T2390 is based on the older "CoreDuo"

If the 30 quid isn't gonna be too much of a problem then the T7250 will prob be better....

HOWEVER, if these are two separate laptops you're considering e.g. one Dell and the other a HP, then weigh up all the pros and cons of each before you decide on one over the other.

Aww thank you Flossie, it is definitely about getting as much as I can for my money. I've been trying to decide on a laptop forever now. I finally got down to 2 and chose 1 because even though it was heavier than my other choice, it had a dedicated graphics card.

When it came though, it was so heavy I could barely lift it.It had one of those glossy screens and my room is a sun trap, so I had another mirror!
    It was a complete disaster.

Luckily the company are waiving their return policy and letting me exchange it, so once I clarify that the laptop in my basket is a non glossy screen, I'll snap it up. I've also made sure that it's got Vista Home Premium because the manufacturer will do a free upgrade to windows 7 home premium in October. :D

The T7250 has a higher bus speed (800 vs 550) and also double the L2 cache size, so probably worth the extra, yes. Check the battery life of the 2 machines though, there may be a price to pay for that extra speed.
