Mrscarney I have a similar problem with my Hp slimline desktop which is also down to faulty nvidia graphics card and appears to be widespread in hp laptops and slimline desktops. Having googled to see what I could find on the net I didn;t immediately find much out about it, however after some rooting around found a very useful site http://www.hplies.com/

If you have a look through all of the info on there you will see that many people have been affected by this with some having success in getting their pc / laptop repaired free notwithstanding that they are now outwith the extended warranty period.

HP and Nvidia appear to have been aware of this problem for some time and imho should have recalled all affected machines, however from reading some of the posts it appears that it is possible the cost could run into $billions, presumably the reason Nvidia and HP are not proceeding in that manner.

I have reported my problem to HP tech support and am currently awaiting their reply - will let you know how I get on.

Thank you very much for the link to the website, it's an interesting read. I had half thought about emailing HP to express my disappointment and looking at the website has convinced me it's worth a try - after all, I've nothing to lose. I would appreciate you keeping me informed as to your progress and thanks again for the link.

Yes it's as easy as that.

Unfortunately, the connectors on the adapter don't fit my hard drive

Have emailed the supplier for advice, hopefully will get a quick reply.

The adaptor that I linked to supports 2.5" both IDE and Sata interfaces, so it should be fine. In some laptops the actual hard drive is fitted to an adaptor plate which then plugs into the laptop. The USB adaptors will only plug onto the actual hard drive connector and therefore needs to be removed from any adaptor.

Aha! I guess that might the problem as the adapter is supposed to fit both IDE and SATA and I have SATA. Is it just a case of gently pulling the adaptor plate off?

Thanks so much for the advice

Usually there are a couple of very small screws which hold the actual hard drive to the hard drive adaptor plate/frame. The hard drive slides in/out from the opposite end to the laptop connector i.e. from the LHS side on the picture above.

    It's working :j
Took a few goes at powering on and off and trying a different USB port but it's transferring over now.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH

I thought I was pretty good backing up every couple of months but I think it will be every week now :o
