High yield short term investment of £3k - ideas??

hello everyone, i have a £3k lump sum to invest and i would like to see a good return over a short term (12-24mths) obviously i'm willing to accept risk given the high yield i'm chasing but i was hoping for some advice as to which routes i could consider. I heard about longer term FTSE linked investments that are tax effcient but the one mentioned in the guides is 5 years fixed which dosen't suit my needs. Something shorter and more accessable would be good. Is there a half way house between the above and actually buying shares? (with my limited knowledge)

Penny shares!?

In my economics studies years ago at school we put together an imaginary portfolio and i tripled my money inside 6 months mainly on some very dodgy penny shares in media.

I thoght i'd have more of the same with my own money - all i need is some names of companies whos share price will definetly triple over the next 12mths!
