If its under warantee check the conditions to see if it covers accidental damadge (also contents insurance).
If its not under warrantee give us the model number and someone will try and dig out the service manual.
In the first instance you should always immediatly turn the device off, unplug and remove the battery and leave to dry out. Strip down all the componants you dare and blot carefully with something like kitchen paper.
If your are fairly practical you should be able to follow the manual and at least get under the key board and palm rest and VERY carefully clean away the sticky residue with cotton wool buds, let it dry really thoroughly reassemble and see if it switches on.
If your not feeling confident then take it to a small independant computer shop and get a quote for them to open it up and have a look (bearing in mind they wont know what componants are shot untill they look) hopefully they should be at least able to save the hard drive with all your data on it (if you are lucky). Milkshake (or fizzy pop) is just about the worst thing you could spill on it as its full of (conductive) sugar and the sticky residue can hang around and cause short circuits.
Mental note for future - Never allow drinks around electrical equiptment! Still it's not all bad, at least he wasn't electrocuted.

some (posher) laptops have a slot for an extra hard drive, worth checking the manual of the working one to see if its possible.

But in a more helpful way, you can get external drive cases in many places; I've bought a couple off ebay and they're fine.
You can also get just a USB cable with a multi-pin plug to plug into the drive without a case (ie. intended as a temporary measure).
If you don't like ebay, they also sell them at computer fairs (it'll probably cost you £2 entrance though), and/or car boots.
It may even be worthwhile buying a used one with a small obsolete drive in it and swapping in your vaio one.
  • My sz died due to the cat knocking a vase of water all over it, Luckily I had good home insurance and the payout I got from them was for more than I paid for the laptop (was a sony factory reconditioned paid £1300 instead of £2000 and got £1500 from insurance)

Suggest you try and claim it on your home insurance as it is likely beyond repair if liquid is spilt on it
