get cheap cot from ebay, buy the most expensive mattress you can afford with the amount you've saved on a new cot.

THANKS for the quick post. The most expensive one is
MOTHERCARE Pocket Sprung Mattress with CoolMaxActive £134.990 -
we got a cot from ebay at 60 quid (it looks new and is lovely) as we wanted a cot not a cotbed our mattress doesnt have to last as long as yours so we just went for a foam one, mattresses are odd things cause you know you will only use them for 3/4 years on a cotbed and cant swap themto your next xhild. Your 135 pound one works out at only a fiver a month or so for the life of the mattress which isnt too bad at all.0

The mattress needs to fit snug inside the cot. There is a maximum recommended gap between the matress and the cot sides which good sales assistants will know (I can't remember). The mattress needs to be easily cleaned!!
Good luck!I like to live in cloud cuckoo land :hello:0 -
i've got 2 2nd hand cot beds (from family and friend) and got new matresses from littlewoods, i got the most expensive ones which are really comfy. i think they were about £80 each (last year) and used a discount code posted on the coupons board.
my 4yr old is still in his cot bed with sides down and he loves it, saying its really cosy.Give blood - its free0 -
The gap is an absolute maximum of 4cm

Try and get a nice soft mattress, a babies head is very soft and can be flattened by laying against hard surfaces, particularly if a baby has a tendency to favour one side.
All the best
