very noisy, and getting error messages etc. Its been crashing down frequently over the last few months and it is on its last legs anyway but need it to last me till I finish typing my dissertation.

It didn't sound that noisy till today :eek::eek: Is it possible to get viruses because of saving a map from a site? I am downloaded a map (not a google one) and worried thismaybe the reason

PS. the computer is so bad can't even keep up with running an anti-virus programme

Any advice (except for bin it lol) will be appreciated, thanks x

  • What model is it?

I used to have a Dell laptop that made a lot of noise because the fan didn't work properly. When i contacted them so they could fix it, they said it was an error with the model. The vents were under the computer, and while it was on a table, it couldn't "breathe" if you will. As a result, it would overheat, and crash. I had to start putting it on stilts (two books on either side to hold it up) so that the fan could work.

I'm not sure if that's your problem, but really it could be a ton of things.

Was it fine before you downloaded this map? I doubt that it's the map anyways...have you tried to delete the map just in case?
Me: Would you like a drink?

Old Man: I don't drink anymore [awkward silence] that being said...I dont drink any less either!

Thank you for your reply. It does make a lot of sense. I didn't delete the map because I did a lot of work on it :o:o and I need it.

Mine is Toshiba and the CS are hopeless. It was never ok for 2 years: had major crashes at least 4 times ...

I will follow your advice re the books, mine gets overheated too and the vents are under it......
thank you again for your help x
  • Either the fan is about to fail, or harddrive about to fail, or both.If you have any important files on this PC (photos, music, email etc.) copy them to CD/DVD.

switch it off and hoover the air intake, it may be clogged with dust causing overheating. and save your data.

    /THIS

Or even just a USB stick for now so you can continue working on it, the last thing you need is for your dissertation to be stuck on the hard drive of a dead/dying laptop.

There is no way a virus can make a computer noisy (except maybe through it's speakers!). Your computer is dying (probably the hard drive) so get your important data onto something else NOW because the next crash might be the last.

Hard drives in laptops are cheap and easy to replace, but that may be little consolation if your dissertation has gone down the Swanee...

The vents should be cleaned but not with a Hover as these create lots of static electricity. A can of air duster e.g. here is the correct way to do it.

A couple of drinking straws work well at a pinch, McDonalds work best due to the diameter.
