Does anyone know what the rules are about income tax when you're a student? I have been working part time over the academic year as well as during the summer. Have been paying a fair amount of tax in this time. Are students meant to pay tax? if so how much? If I have paid too much how do I get it back? Thanks

Yes you have to pay tax if you are a student - the rules are the same as for everyone else. However, most students don't pay tax as they earn less than their personal allowance.

You pay tax like everyone else.
You can earn 6475 per annum before tax and then you pay at the rate of 20% on the amount over that.

Check you have the correct code..asuming you only have one job then it should be 647L.
