DVLA / DVLNI - who knows what?

In Northern Ireland, do ANPR cameras - or even the PSNI themselves - have the facility to be able to check whether a GB (not NI) registered car has tax, insurance or MOT? Or do they have access only to DVLNI records, and not DVLA?

Similarly, if an NI registered car is in GB, do the police / mainland ANPR cameras have access to check whether the said NI vehicle has tax, insurance or MOT?

I ask because, although Northern Ireland and Great Britain both make up the United Kingdom, the two entities have different vehicle and driver licensing authorities.

A mainland reg number is valid in NI and vice versa. Can't answer your specific question, but if an NI vehicle is caught on a speed camera in GB, they do get caught, just ask any hire company! This would suggest that info is freely shared, and that tax and MOT data would be available in both directions. DVA and DVLNI are meant to be merging though I thought.
You planning a tax dodge? ;-)
  • the DVLA cant access NI database in the same way, the NI cant access the DVLA.

    hope this helps

Really appreciate the replies guys, but these posts are somewhat contradictory, so I'm still none the wiser. :(

In that case Jammin, perhaps you need a more specialist forum.

    Try here.
  • There has been something in the NI news recently regarding locally registered cars having issues with ANPR on the mainland, and I'm pretty sure it was to do with no MOT record showing. I think the drivers were/are getting spot fines regardless of their pleas.

The local assembly are on the case, so no doubt it will be some time before something positive happens...

NI cars dont require MOT's until they are 4 years old.
