Co-op basic account opening query

Hi, phoned Co-op today re opening basic account in prep for BR. I was told that it was best to wait until after BR because it will be frozen. I have read on this board that is will happen but will only be temporary whilst OR deals with BR. Many others seem to have opened accounts prior to BR with little or no problems at all.

The person seemed reluctant to go any further and just said to ring back once BR is filed/agreed.

Told them I was going to go BR as they asked me the reason I only wanted a basic account.

Should I just ring back and hope that someone else will understand my situation? Am worried about how I will pay utilities etc whilst waiting for account to be opened.

Anyone else have/heard of this? And if so can you help?

Thanks in advance.

The person you spoke to doesn't really know very much
Co-op do not freeze cashminder accounts and it's fine to open one before BR. Phone back and hopefully you'll get someone different.

Hi. i opened a co op account (joint) in july for post br which is september. i have been told that it should be , will be frozen for approx 24 hours but should be fine. make sure if you do get one, get all money out that is for your own use & leave money in for dd's etc. also as long as you dont live in brighton, as i have heard they close them down there, you should be fine. the co op account is brill. here hopeing to them keeping account open. i guess the o.r's are all different.

Hi dollparts, just to say I had the same response when I called co-op to open a cashminder account. They said I could open it but that it would be frozen when I go BR and may take a while to un-freeze, whereas opening an account just after going BR would be quicker.

As other have stated this is not necessarily true but I decided to wait anyway. I went BR yesterday so will be calling co-op today to open the account.

    Hi

Ok back from the local Co Op branch. All went smoothly, felt embarrased mentioning BR next week but very un judgemental girl opening our account!

The account will take 3-5 days to be up and running and they will send all the details to us in post. Can set up internet banking when acc is running. They also opened 2 cash isa's for us to start saving in, no problems with the forthcoming BR, just said account may be frozen but not for long.

All in all was easier than I expected, one thing down forms next !!

Thanks for letting us know Angie, it would appear that the response is different if you open an account in person-maybe they have been advised to new customers to wait, could an admin cutting issue?

I was too busy with work to phone them again this afternoon so will try in the morning. If I don't get anywhere there I will go into my local branch.....and like you will wince when I say the BR word:embarasse

You're going BR and next week and are just starting on the forms? It took me ages to complete mine. Have a look at them soon - we'll be here for any questions you may come across. Don't forget to post your SOA for guidance.

    Hi

I appreciate your comment over the forms, thankyou. I have all the info ready I need to fill them in, I have read them back to front loads of times and I realise it will take us sometime to get it all down on paper. I am hoping im well prepared but like you say im sure there will be questions I need to ask. Thankyou for your comments,

Well, phoned them again this morning and went through application over the phone. Was all over in little over 5 mins and I was approved! Should get info through with 5 days or so :)

    Another worry put to bed.
