Really Scared

I had a standard eye test yesterday, because I keep getting white flashing lights above one eye.

Now within 24 hours I am having an operation. :(

There is something wrong with my retina and they tried to send me to London yesterday to have the op. But I refused to go 200 miles. So, now I have to have complete bed rest till monday when they see me again and tell me when they are doing it.

I am v obese and therefore this operation could actually well kill me, and I amsitting here trying to weigh up the pro's and cons' which are basically, i may go blind, or, I may die.

Sometimes life sucks.

Sorry to hear about your situation, I have had problems with my eye and had to go to hospital to get it checked out. I hope everything goes well, get them to explain everything to you and tell them you are very nervous. Some eye ops only take 10-15 mins with the modern lasers etc, so it may not be as bad as you think. Good luck

Have you been told by the hospital it could kill you or are you thinking that yourself??? Try not to work yourself up i'm sure if it was a choice between your eye sight and your life the hospital wouldn't do the operation and tell you that you have to lose weight before they do.

Can you ring and speak to someone at the hospital who may be able to put your mind at rest?? if not try not to think of the worse and wait to see what the doctor tells you tomorrow.

    Good Luck

Lasers won't fix the retinal tear, because it is too large. It has to be an operation under general anesthetic.

I know I am too big for an operation, but the problem with my eye is one which can increase dreadfully, and if the retina comes off completely, then I will have real bad sight problems.

Oh, and there was I going to say that I hoped this didn't make things worse but they seem to do eye surgery under a local quite often ... which freaked out my friend who hadn't realised this before she finally got her bed!

OK, there are risks, for anyone undergoing any surgery, and the risks increase if you're overweight etc. BUT presumably they wouldn't consider giving you a general if they were SURE it was going to kill you (doesn't do much for the hospital's stats!), or even if there was a very very high chance it was going to kill you.

And with respect, but if you're having complete bed rest, should you be looking at a computer screen with an eye problem? Maybe it's bandaged shut and you're using a laptop ... hope so!

    All the best!

Well, the doctor yesterday said I could do anything so long as I was sitting up, and they didn't bandage my eye.

to be fair I can't see much, its a tad blurry due to the things they did yesterday.

Just to wish you best of luck ... I think if they are aware of any additional risks they do take extra special care of you while you're in theatre! Deep breathing and do your best to think about something else now ...

    Good luck Lady S.

They might not need to give you a general anaesthetic. My mum has twice had to have an op for a gynae problem but as she had a part of a lung removed over 40 years ago they'd rather not give her a general. Both times they said the she would be in a twilight sleep (and not properly under anasthetic. Not sure of the right terms for it). My mum is normally a very light sleeper but both times she said she never knew anything about it.

Please post and let us know how you get on. Just remember that there are thousands of people every day who go under anaesthetic and they're fine.
