movie downloads. cant watch them!

I want to download films to my comp to watch and possibly make a dvd of them. How do i do this?

I downloaded Mr & Mrs Smith and tried to play it but got this message "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

I have also tried to open with real player, Win DVD and Div X player.

Its an avi file ithink, whatever that means.

Can someone help please.

Sorry if I am being a fool but if I dont ask i'll never know!
