Ive just done a re install of xp and installed firefox but when i try and open it i get a message saying Firefox is already open and i should close it, stop the process or restart the machine to open firefox. Ive checked task manager and there's no firefox.exe processes open so i restart and it still doesnt help. Anyone got any ideas, ive tried to reinstall firefox and its the same.

    try going into C:\documents and settings\*yourname*\Application Data\Firefox\Profiles\
and remove the folder in there to somewhere else.
Then try. It should make a new folder. If it doesn't work, nothing lost as you can put the removed folder back again.
  • I used to think firefox was great now I have this problem too, so do a few of my friends. We have moved on to chrome :)

Have you used TaskManager (ctrl-alt-del and click task manager to start it) to see if a firefox process is running or not. If it is try terminating the process and see what happens.

Try starting Firefox in safemode. You can do this from Start - All Programs-Mozilla Firefox-Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode)

Out of interest are you running zonealarm firewall as well. I had a similar firefox problem and after a long search discovered this incompatability. I changed to comodo firewall and solved the problem.

I had this once, after an update to a newer version, where not even Firefox Safe Mode worked, I had to delete my Firefox profile which is normally kept in your user settings folder.

Quick way to test is to setup a new user on your machine, logout and login as that user - does Firefox load OK for that user? If so then it's a profile issue.

I'd then consider renaming/moving your Firefox profile folder to some other location and let it regenerate a new one...

    See here for info: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Profiles

But backup the folder and then rename it rather than deleting it, as then you can retrieve bookrmarks or other settings files from there later if need be.

Edit: sorry didn't see the 2nd post that already suggested this.

I had a look and i found this, http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_in_use, i may have caused it by messing around with the bookmarks folder which im trying to get back into use
