Can anyone recommend anywhere to stay in Athens please. I am looking for somewhere that would suit a family (2AD and 3CH) for sightseeing for 2 or 3 days early September, thanks

In general I have found hotels in Athens to be more expensive and in many cases, fairly dingy, cramped affairs compared to equivalent standard hotels on the various islands.

I have stayed in the Art Hotel near Omonia Square in previous years - it was extremely good value for money. Fairly airy and clean, but not in the most attractive part of town, but convenient for transport and the archealogical museum. Tripadvisor have it as 10th out of 322 for Athens.

Another place we have stayed in along the coast (in Glyfada) which is near where the tram terminates. There are some reasonable beaches, and its easy to get to the attractions. We stayed in the London hotel, which was OK but you could probably do better.

However, in recent years we have tended to stay out on a nearby island and commute in for the sightseeing or flights home. This gives us a place to stay outside of the concrete and smog that is Athens, whilst being able to go in the sea. In recent years we have stayed on Aegina (around 35 minutes on the hydrofoil from Pireaus) or, our favourite, Agistri (next door - about 50 minutes on the hydrofoil). Here we stay at Andreas Hotel, which has a decent pool. (except of course, the cost of ferry tickets may be prohibitive if there are 5 of you).

From Aegina and Agistri (as well as Athens itself), there are excursions to Corinth and Epidavros. Theres a fair bit of stuff to see on Aegina itself.

(All assuming Athens Greece that is, not Athens Georgia).

Thanks DavidLizard - i want to stay in Athens as we will be spending a week near Epidavros. i haven't been to Athens since 91, so am keen to see how it has changed and show the kids around. Omonia may be Ok, it's only for a couple of nights - unless anyone else knows better.....
