hello i got a tomtom about two years ago and its fantastic! Youd probably have a newer model so it'd be even better but i highly recommend them. As far as i know, theonesbought in the uk work only in the uk but you then buy an america chip which will direct you around america. I think its a different chip for different countries. They're just little sim card looking things, not sure how much they are. Anyhoo, its very good and i love my tomtom!
then again i cant find my way out of a paper bag so id never be able to get anywhere without one hahaTotal abstinence is so excellent a thing that it cannot be carried to too great an extent. In my passion for it I even carry it so far as to totally abstain from total abstinence itself. Oscar Wilde0 -
My OH bought a Tom Tom/
Not sure I can be quite as enthusiastic as the last poster (I tend to find the thing a distraction at the best of times), but it can be useful when you are going somewhere that you have not been to before (unless it has been built since the last version of the mapping system -). I map read really well so dont rely too heavily on it even when going somewhere new.
The additional maps are not cheap - check the Tom Tom website - so might be cheaper to either buy one in the states or rent one through car hire company.
I have no idea if Tom Tom is that much better than other cheaper models available - if I were buying another, I would investigate this option.
(there is a thread somewhere about this - possibly shop but dont drop)0 -
other makes are from 175 pounds.
If I were you I'd be looking at buying in the states and buying a UK chip for over here.0 -
If you wait for the new tomtom 910 (about to be released) it will have UK, Europe, US and Canada.
I have been using Tom Tom Navigator since v2, then 3 and now 5 on my PDA. I have used it in the UK, Holland, Blgium, France, Spain and US (for the latter downloaded a regional map from TT). I find it invaluable and never travel without it. I have driven around 40k miles a year for the last 15 years, and would not go back to maps and handwritten notes under any circumstances.
The additional features like points of interst are useful, if like me you want to find a post office or cash machine, nearest filling station etc whilst travelling.

The US maps will work in a UK tomtom. Is there a reason your going for the 700 model, do you need european mapping aswell? If you only need UK then go for the 'ONE' for £225 plus TomTom US maps £120:
