Best thing would be to try a few sites like Expedia, lastminute.com, etc.

I'd budget around £650 - £900 each, New Year is a very busy time in NY and the flight prices will reflect this.

I would be looking to book the flights ASAP to get the best price.

Continental (https://www.continental.com/uk) have flights from Manchester to New York direct for about £350 from 26 December to 2 January. I don't think you'll get much cheaper than that, really.

Expedia have some fairly reasonable flight and hotel packages available, but that would depend on where you're looking to stay. Some decent looking 4 star hotels with (indirect) flights can be had for about £700 per person.

I booked flights with air india through expedia 2 new years ago which were v. reasonable and we stayed in a self contained apartment that could sleep upto 4 people.
I spent weeks checking with a number of sites for the best deal though.
If you plan to do time sq on new years eve be prepared for a long wait and take something warm, they start to arrive mid morning in anticipation of the evenings festivities and once you are in the crowd its not easy to get out.
We booked into a restauarant (Ruby Foos) for the evening its an expensive meal but they have there own bit of sidewalk that you go out onto (with your champagne) at around 11.55pm, you see it all happen and then go back inside for coffee and dessert, its all very civalised

P.S. I've just checked for flight and hotel on expedia and it really depends on what day you fly and what sort of accomodation you need

In 2003 our family of four flew from Heathrow to JFK with Air India at a very much better price than anyone else would do. No problems except Heathrow check in was a bit of a shambles.

Then, we stayed in a two bed apartment very close to Time Square (Radio City apartments - they're on the net). We had one double bedroom and a twin - would this work for you? It worked out at about the cost of one and a half hotel rooms. Last year, we stayed at some apartments in Murray Hill at 39th street (we booked via http://www.apartments2book.com/newyork.htm). Again, one double one, twin. This was less central (10 min walk to Grand central stn) but very much bigger and with 2 bathrooms.
