NPower pre payment electric meter nightmare

I am happily with Southern Electric on direct debit since May 08.
I was with NPower on the dreaded pre payment electric meter for 3 years-March 2005-08. I changed for a lower bill due to the obviously expensive pre payment meter. Southern installed a different meter for me.
NPower have been hassling me for over a year now for an incredible bill amount to clear up the account. I have phoned, emailed and written and still with no satisfaction for me.
Strangely i never received statements in my final year with them. But they have forwarded them now and they do raise eyebrows.
Quarterly bill Jan 07 revealed £1.98 in debt. Quarterly for Apr 07 revealed £51 in debt and then MAY 07 revealed £775 in debt. Besides that i should n't even receive a quarterly bill a month later and that i could never use over £700 electric in a month rings alarm bells .
I am sure that they changed their customers database accounts in this period and i feel i have been mixed up with someone elses bill.
Further statements they have sent to me reveal that someone was "paying off" this debt with payments at regular intervals. It wasn't me. When questioned they couldn't tell me what was going on but it was an error.
They have now reduced this "debt" to £70 for me.
I am going round in circles always communicating with different people in their company.
I am aware of the undercharging of electric on those meters but as they never changed or reset that meter before i cancelled my account with them, i feel that is not part of this or MY problem.
It seems they know they have messed up and are trying to claw back £70 from me. I have heard this figure has been quoted to other customers in the same boat.
Any advice is very welcome for my next step.
thanks, Stuart

Facts. Get the facts. £1.98 in Jan 07, £51 and £775 is not enough. Meter readings, dates and meter reference numbers are the facts.
