Can I cancel BT line, despite having Sky TV?

I have my landline with BT, and have done for just over 12 months. However, we rarely use the phone because we have the mobiles and the any calls we DO receive are from people asking for 'Mr L' (...I won't disclose any names for security reasons and it's irrelevant anyway!). It would appear that we've been given an old number which obviously belonged to 'Mr L' previously. It's getting tedious now and far be it from asking BT to issue us with another number, I am tempted to just cancel my BT contract.
However, I seem to have piked up from somewhere that you need a BT landline in order to have your Sky, so I don't want to go cancelling it if it means we are unable to use our Sky.
It just seems a hell of a waste to be paying the £50 odd line rental charge, just to be bombarded with calls that aren't ever for us and for a phone line we barely use anyway.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received...

Use BT's free Caller Display - and don't answer calls from numbers you don't recognise.

if you have had sky for over 12 months you don't need a phone line plugged in, but if under 12 months you can use any phone supplier0

It's from ntl so is independent of the phone line, i.e. runs from it's own cable/juntion box outside house.0 -
You just need to have A phone line for sky... My ex had a telewest line but sky installed, simply plugs in, doesnt make a difference where the line is from.. But as someone just posted, I think if your outside your 12months then it doesnt make a difference. However, i think its needed for things like some interactive features and billing for SKY Box Office£4988 Lloyds TSB Mastercard
£400 O/D Lloyds TSB
£2650 Lloyds TSB Loan
£5070 Black Horse Finance
Skint, but I have a plan.... an MSE Plan!!!0 -
You can use any phone line provider you want and still get Sky TV, not necessary to have to be a BT line.
As others have said if you use the interactive Sky then you will need to have a phone line attached, this is required by Sky for the first 12 months only, after that you can unplug the phone line at any time.
Unplugged my phone from sky 3 or 4 years ago and made no difference.
Sky still repeating the same programs from early 1990s though so why waste your money on it, have just cancelled mine.
A little tip though, when you phone to cancel they do not want to loose you and will offer you the same package at a reduced subscription for anything between 3 & 6 months, if you want to keep Sky and save a bit of cash give it a try, just say it is too expensive/cannot afford it or something similar but be careful not to be too stubborn, I imagine there is a limit on how much of a reduction they are authorised to offer.
Cancelled mine, was paying £18 per month, was offered 6 months @ £7.50, not a bad reduction. Would say though that I still cancelled due to busy work season starting, no time to watch TV, too many anglers to look after.
