Switching Reps Posing As Meter Readers
Hello
A person from a utility company called at my brothers house last week asking to read the meter. When inside, the person pretended to read the meter then started talking about how much money can be saved by switching.
This person was actually from Scottish Power and was with a team who were in the area to try and get people to switch.
I that happened to me I would definitely report it. I have also heard of British Gas switching teams operating in a similar way in my local area.

At our house, they can have fun talking to themselves in the garage! (That's after they've climbed over everything to read the meters.)A chicken crossing the road is poultry in motion0

Hi Birkonian,
At ScottishPower we expect our sales agents to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner, this includes absolute honesty as to the reason for their visit. It is therefore very disappointing to learn how these individuals may have conducted themselves.
If you would like me to ensure a full and thorough investigation is carried out please PM me the address of the property that was visisted and I will do all I can to ensure nothing like this happens again.
Craig @ ScottishPower“Official Company Representative
I am the official company representative of Scottish Power. MSE has given permission for me to post in response to queries about the company, so that I can help solve issues. You can see my name on the companies with permission to post list. I am not allowed to tout for business at all. If you believe I am please report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com This does NOT imply any form of approval of my company or its products by MSE"0 -
Well done Scottish Power (for the above post). Shame on Scottish Power for the behavior in the OP ! My mother was 'victim' to SP's selling practices at home, but she didn't mind because it genuinely did save her money. Luckily.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

There is no need for a meter reader ever to sell the company product, because a meter reader only deals with people who are already buying from the company.
I don't know what the appropriate response is, police for bogus meter reader? eject the person leaving a boot mark on their backside?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Indeed, meter readers do just that, read the meter, and nothing else. They have no responsibility wrg to tarrifs etc.
More often than not they are subcontractors from the energy company, Accuread is the usual one I see.0 -
while i would like to think this is not company policy this has happened to us just a few months ago , now either its something suggested in the training or they are all comming up with the same lies, i know which one id bet money on ! im not saying they are any worse than other providers but i think most people know when they are being given the bog standard reply as above. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Scottish Power are coming across very bad on these boards, the way they tout for business is disgusting and will probably ruin them.
I certainly would never reccomend them judging by all these threads.
How dare some one lie there way into your home like that, that is a criminal offence.
Oooh i will soo be checking very carefully the id badges from now on.0
