Resigning - can I claim JSA??

I am due to go back to work next month after maternity leave. After paying for childcare and diesel I will be left with nothing so can't afford to go back to that job.

I'm going to look for evening work i can do around the children but wondered if I would be able to claim JSA in the meantime. I'm not sure my reason for resigning would be sufficient.

We are not entitled to any help with costs and I have no family to look after them.

Any help gratefully received!
Thank you.

iirc, you can't claim for the first 8 weeks if you resign.

This is not true, the op may not get sanctioned at all the DM will look at her personal circumstances and make their decison.

The op should sign on straight away even if she is going to get sanctioned.

    To the op

Have you paid enough NI conts for the tax years ending 07 and 08?

    Do you have a partner?

You could claim contribution based JSA for 6 months.

You need to explain why you cannot return to work and hopefully they might not sanction you. If you are sanctioned it can be between 2-26 weeks.

Thanks for your help. I'll contact JC+ once I have 'done the deed'! Very scary as I have been there 13 years.

I still have to pay for childcare the hours I am there and that nearly wipes out what I earn. It's still not feasible with childcare vouchers, we don't get pre school funding till next year.

It's not just your mum, my MIL thinks if you leave a job, for whatever reason, you have to wait 8 weeks  I've told her again and again you don't but what do I know eh?
