Is travel insurance really worth it??

Im due to fly to sweden at the end of this week and stay with a relative for a week, I have a European Health Insurance Card.

Is it really worth me getting travel insurance??? As in the past they cover you for everything other than the thing you are claiming for!

Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks

Yes it most certainly is. If you are seriously ill and need an air ambulance to get you back to the UK this would cost a small fortune. God forbid but if you die overseas it would cost a fortune to repatriate your body.
Insurance would cover these eventualities and also cover things like legal aid and advice if you need it.

So yes for the sake of a few quid, get travel insurance!

You don't really, it isn't Insurance.
You actually have a European Health Card.
Travel insurance is a bit of insurance.

Having always taken out travel insurance and never used it I too thought was it worth it? However, last year my 11yr old son had a very bad ear infection and with doctors visits, pain relief and prescription tablets and drops it cost a fair amount. We had a cheap family policy and it covered it all. So thankfully it only cost us £36 in the end not the 260 euros. It's not a big example but still worth it.

The EHIC doesn't provide free cover in Sweden - you have to pay at least part of the cost of the treatment and I doubt it's cheap.

Your travel insurance will subject to an excess repay these charges.

For the sake of the insurance costing less than a tenner, it's peace of mind

My advice is to make sure you DO have insurance.

The EHIC just means that you're treated the same way as a citizen of that country.
Is medical treatment free in Sweden?
If not, you'd have to pay what they would pay for any treatment you need.

Also, your EHIC won't be much good to you in the event that you lose something.

My father had a heart attack in Marmaris. Was in a private hospital for 6 weeks. Insurance covered all treatment ( at over £1000 per day) and repatriation flight in an air ambulance. It also covered my mother staying in the accomodation for the six weeks and £25 per diem to cover incidental costs.

If they had not had insurance it would have cost them over £50,000!

    Best £70 they ever spent.

If anybody is reading this and considering not buying insurance, consider the chap in the bed next to my Dad. He didn't have insurance- he had to borrow money and max out his credit card to pay the bills. It cost him £17,000. He could have bought insurance for around a tenner!!
