overpaying woolwich/barclays mortgage

As a way of overpaying regularly on my Woolwich mortgage, I ring them up occasionally, and have the term reduced, thus upping the payments each month.

However, I would also like to make lump sum payments from time to time. I have so far had four different answers as to how to go about this, from customer services. So I wrote and asked instead. I've had the reply from Barclays, and it states 'Send a cheque to the above address'...the letter was on plain paper....no address at all. It had the wrong Dear Mr & Mrs, the wrong mortgage account number....it stated in the first paragraph that we could over pay 10%, then in the second paragraph reffered to our 5% maximum overpayment. It mentioned during this year, 2008/09..we're actually in 2009 - 2010..... Is this a record for how many mistakes Woolwich can make in one letter I wonder.:rotfl::rotfl:

The letter did mention paying in cash at any Barclays branch, so I opted for this one this morning. Out of five people behind the counter, nobody had ever done an overpayment. Nobody knew where to put the money. They asked for proof that I was allowed to do it this way, they wanted a cheque instead, and at one point said that although they could take the money and would try their best to get it into my account, they COULD NOT give me a receipt for it!!! I left with my money safe - with me!

So, anybody out there make lump sum payments to Woolwich? Firstly, brave you! And secondly how did you do it please?

I've been wondering this myself.. for the last three years! I haven't had a straight answer out of them yet, they dont make it easy do they
I was told if you have your mortgage account number and sort code you can set up a standing order from any account but I cant find anything with these details on and they couldnt give them to me over the phone.
I'll be following this thread with interest :D

I make overpayments to my fixed rate mortgage, simply asked them for a sort code/acc number/reference and paid as & when I felt like it from my Barclays online account.

That's a good idea, but rather than a standing order, I'd like to pay in cash over the counter. I was also told that the information was not available over the phone. Safesound is right...they don't make it easy for you!
    Any more ideas welcome.

I spoke to the morgage chap in Barclays about doing this when I went in the other day for an initial consultation. He said that it was fine, easily done online or over the phone. All you needed was the mortgage account number and sort code.

We have a Woolwich offset mortgage, in order to pay lump sums off the mortgage, we merely transfer into the mortgage account, we do this online.

We were told that too Leesoutheast...

If it were an offset Zed that would be great but we're on a ten year fix. I wish we'd gone with offset now actually, but as Leesoutheast says, the mortgage adviser in branch tells you before hand that it's a doddle overpaying. Not so! I'll keep trying, just worries me that I pay the cash in at a branch, and it's weeks before it shows against my mortgage balance. I have visions of having to chase round to find my money, and nobody willing to help (as is usually the case when speaking to them at Woolwich/Barclays). Never mind, it's building up nicely in the meantime. Carp interest rate but building all the same!! Haha
  • My standing order and single over payments go to the sort code 238897, where the '97' last two digits of the sort code are the first two digits of the mortgage account number. The other eight digits of the mortgage account number are then the account number (that go with the sort code).

Sounds really complex, hopefully you'll work it out! I do my overpayments by online banking (from a non-Barclays account).

Just looking at online banking to set up a standing order, to give it a go that way. Really stupid question probably, but 'Standing Order To':...should that be Barclays PLC, or should it be my name as the mortgage account is my name?
  • Hmm - I use my own name, not sure if it matters.

Your name, as the sort code and account number is specific to you.
