Possible fault with laptop power connector

Hi

Really appreciate some help. My AC/ adaptor was breaking - it started to show some broken wire near to where it plugs into the back of the laptop and was becoming unreliable. I have bought a replacement adapter off of ebay and it only works when it wants to!

Does this mean the fault actually is within the laptop where it connects and not the adaptor itself?

I have phoned up a repair shop and they said that if it is the back of the laptop where you plug in the adaptor - it will be expensive!!

Any ideas how I can be certain of where the fault is and if I can rectify it myself?

Grateful for any advice.
Thanks

When power is connected it's usually easy to tell because a light normally comes on on the case somewhere. This sounds like it could be a dodgy connection onto the laptop's main circuit board from the power plug. It's easy to tell, just carefully wiggle the connector around. If there's a bad connection then one particular direction of movement will either mean power or no power, it'll become obvious in a short time. If that's the case then it'll need to be resoldered usually by a specialist. Just look in the back of any local paper and there will be 3 or 4 local specialists listed, just ring one and tell them what you've found, they'll usually give you an instant price.

    dont listen to the shop!!!

Its only complicated to strip it down and put it together again. It really depends what laptop it is. It could be a 5 min job or 3 hour job depending how accessible the DC socket is to get to.

Ive done several myself, if your handy with a soldering iron its easy enough to download a service manual which will show a stripdown procedure and just solder a new socket on. If not give https://www.rowcom.co.uk a shout and get a quote, they did one for me not too long ago and I think it was about £65.

Do you know anyone with a similar laptop to your own?

If so, first try your new charger with their computer and vice-versa.

This will identify whether it is your computer or your new charger that is faulty.
