i bought a bed about 2 months ago online from wilkinsons - when it came there was screws missing and the headboards hadnt been glued together right so i had to buy some wood glue and do them - also there was a sliver of wood broke off at the bottom of the box which had come off the headboard....
i complained and received a £25 cheque as compo.....
i was well satisfied but;
today all i did was get out of bed and i heard a snap and one of the wooden base slats has snapped in two....its not like im obese or anything so my weight isnt a factor...
im just wondering what my rights are? i have just emailed them and if i dont receive a reply i will put my complaint in writing
more annoying is the fact the bed is now half price!!! rub salt in the wound lol...
thanks guys...xx

Sometimes cheaper beds have knots in the wood in dodgy places. This weakens the slat. When putting together kids cabin beds I have always inspected the slats and put any with tricky knots near the headboard/foot where they will get less hammer.
The obvious answer - buy a bit of wood or find one you have in the garage and replace the broken slat.
You had your £25 compensation - you don't really need anything more.0 -
Disagree. £25 is appropriate for the hassle you went through but not good enough for the further damage. Keep at it0

it wont hurt to put your complaint in writing......smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

I would say that this is unfortunately one of those 'get what you pay for' type purchases - as Takoda says, cheaper beds are made of cheaper materials and won't be as resistant to use.
I would have thought that by accepting the £25 rather than demanding a replacement you have accepted that the bed is not of normal standard - if the bed fails in a new and inventive way, Wilko's could argue that they have already compensated you for the substandard bed.
It's always worth a try with these things though - can't hurt!0 -
well i dont think £280 for a bed is cheap but i take your points on board thanks...
wilkinsons phoned me and have arranged for a new slat to be delivered to me - they were lovely on the phone and said if i have any more problems to contact them...

Good ole Wilkos - so glad you got it sorted.
Would make a great post in the 'praise' board!0 -

You didn't put the cost of the bed in your original post magoogy. Whether it is cheap or not depends on whether that was for the frame only or whether it was the price with the mattress included.
Glad you're happy with the result you got though. Not sure whether you wanted more money off or to reject the bed whch you could've then re-bought at the lower price.
Anyway what they've done is fair and replacing rhe slat isn't a big job.
Good result.0 -
As Takoda said you can occasionally get a knot in a place that weakens a slat, and for this reason they can occasionally break. So for this reason any bed seller should be happy to replace them free of charge.
The type of furniture sold in Wilkos is likely to be imported from the far east, and depending on the manufacturer, they aren't allways up to the standard that we come to expect.0 -
thanks all for your latest posts....yep i shouldve stated how much it cost me in the op but forgot lol....and it was only for the frame - i have a lovely orphapaedic mattress i bought from silent night just before christmas and only needed the new frame...
at the moment im happy with their customer service and hopefully there wont be any more problems but, when i replace the slat i will check any others with knots in are placed at the bottom of the bed....
thanks all...xx0 -
Wilko is usually excellent for customer service - you can return things you are unhappy with, even if they have been used, so I am not surprised they replied as they did! Well done for following through and getting a positive response.0
