Wool rug stain

I am a lazy slob making arrangements to move out of my rented flat. Obviously I want as much of my deposit back as possible so I have been undergoing a serious cleaning programme to compensate for two years of benign neglect.
A couple of days ago, while sorting through a pile of assorted books, papers, and general harmless debris I discovered the remains of what I imagine may have at one point been a banana, in a plastic bag. There was a small hole in the bag, and some of the banana's decomposing remains had leaked out onto the wool rug below (and through to the never-have-I-been-so-grateful wipe-clean mock-floorboards below that). The label on the rug says it should be professionally cleaned, but I really don't want to spend that kind of money. I tried putting it in the washing machine on a gentle, cool wash, but both it and the stain emerged unharmed. Any advice?

you were lucky it came out of the washing machine without further damage but the stain may have set now. you could try carpet cleaning spray (1001) or baby wipes.
the odd stain on a rug is fair wear and tear if you have been there 2 years.
general advice is to leave the place in the state you found it as far as reasonably possible. has the landlord or agent made any specific requests as to what they expect? we were asked to clean windows, wash curtains (yes they were machine washable!), weed garden & mow lawn etc.0 -
Steam cleaners are good at getting the majority of stains out if you know anybody who you could borrow one from. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0
