Boiler casing corroded through = new boiler?

Hi all just had my boiler serviced for the first time since we have been in the house (3 years). boiler is 15 years old

the engineer pointed out that there is corrosion to the top of the boiler casing which goes all the way through. this appears to have been caused by water leaking from the shower in the bathroom above. unfortunately we did not know the water had leaked onto the boiler as it was housed inside a kitchen cupboard but the cupboard did not have a top to it.

the engineer says it is currenly ok to be used but the boiler will have to be replaced w/in next year as the case is meant to be airtight and could be breached, drawing air from the room into the boiler.

since he left it has occurred to me would it be possible just to change the casing? or is there a good reason why this is not possible? the fan apparently will also need changing soon but there is no point in doing this if whole unit needs to go.

thanks

    what make model is the boiler? i cannot remember any outside casing thats meant to be airtight?
    an RS boiler is sealed around the burner unit, but not the casing.

    RS = room sealed.

    This site says that the profile is the later, safer against case faults, version.

    Still, before I get into trouble again, better trust the RGI. Did he give you a formal defect notice?

    No, he said it was safe at the moment but advised me to get it fixed before the next service is due ie within a year - and his recommended fix is a replacement boiler.
