Using bed pillows on a sofa

Hi
Please can I have some advice? I am useless when it comes to 'home making' things so I apologise in advance if this seems like a stupid question
My husband has a chronic back condition and finds that pillows (as used in bed to sleep on) are more comfortable than the little cushions you get for the sofa. Obviously this is fine but they are unsightly.
I was thinking about making some covers (never done it before!) that are more in keeping with a living room rather than bedroom as I have never seen them before to buy. Am I right?
Also, does anyone have any advice on how to make them less 'pillow' like IYKWIM? Should I cut them down - although I think the size is part of the thing that makes them comfy.
I would have 2 lots of cusions - for when it's just us at home and then for when we have guests - but we have a new baby and he seems to have taken over any storage space we might have!
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Jo
