I usually trust Steves reviews too. I was wondering however if the poorer images may be something to do with the 1touch focus control that Steve turned off, and consequently may not have noticed.Be nice0

I'm hoping that the guy on the other forum that I posted this on that owns one is going to post some of his pics for us to see.
He says it's excellent and image quality is fantastic.Marillion - A Better Way of Life.0 -

Well look at the ones on the Sanyo site you would of thought they would have been the best but they are noisy.0 -
I agree that the older Xacti models like the VPC-C1 and DMX-C1 (which I used to own) had much sharper pictures and were nearly flawless.
Now the CCD has increased to 6MP there does seem to be a fair amount of noise creeping in and some compression artefacts. I have just bought the Sanyo Xacti HD1 and am not that impressed with the quality of the images (video is fine though!)
Basically you have to ask yourself - what do I intend doing with these photos?
Taking photos at 3MP is big enough to print out at A4 size - here you got 6MP and the possibility of interpolating upto 10MP - would any of us really want to go that big?
Most of my photos I burn to a dvd and play on the dvd player - due to the restrictions of resolution on a tv being only 625 lines high - the resolution is reduced and you see NO noise at all and the picture are VERY clear. Even when I print the photos out the noise seems a lot less aswell.
THEREFORE - I wouldnt let the noise issue sway you on this deal. Just over £100 for a 6MP camera with VGA video quality and a 3 x optical zoom. I personally think it's a bargain even just to resell on Ebay!
I think there are some more samples and opinions about the Sanyo cameras over at https://www.xacti.co.uk

djleekee. That's just what I was thinking. At the sizes I use my photo's noise isn't going to be an issue. I'm looking forward to getting my sexy new camera.Marillion - A Better Way of Life.0

most people will only print at 6x5 or max a4 tbh it would be fine for that. Its a nice looking camera and very portable so atleast you will use it more.
1 question in uk can we taken pics on streets etc or do we need some special permission as I dont want to look daft.

So - what is the best (and, in the spirit of this site, cheapest!) case you can buy for this camera? (if possible something that can stay on there while you use it to save putting it away every 5 mins)
By the way I ordered a 133x Kingston SD card for £28.20 less 10% (QuidCo - tracked straight away) with free delivery from Offtek - should make taking v.short VHSish-quality movies feasible when I don't want to lug the proper camcorder around - Sanyo reckons on about 11mins on 1Gb. Don't know what the biggest card it can handle is so thought best not to risk above 1Gb.The thanks button is here to the right. If you find a post saves you money, gives you useful information, or you agree with it, take a second to thank the poster!

I think there is a thread over at Stevesdigicams detailing which brand of SD cards work in the Xacti and which don't.
I have succesfully used a 2GB but the 4GB is not as stable and not recommended (at the moment)
You stated that it's VHS quality video. I would beg to differ and say that it approaches DVD quality video. Once you burn some of the Mp4 video files to dvd and watch them on your tv screen you will be surprised how good it is and realise that it isnt actually VHS quality but much better.
Mp4 video files (at 640 x 480) will obviously not look as good on your PC monitor's screen due to a much higher resolution.
Cracking price for a quality camera!
PS there are applications out there to remove nosie from pictures if you think it's that much of a problem!

Software such as "Neat Image" can effectively reduce noise on your pics. It's fantastic.
